Word games are so important for building literacy skills. Here are some additional games for the older group (or even for adults!)
7. Word Search Writing
How it works: After completing a word search puzzle, players use the words they find to create a sentence or story.
Writing Benefit: Builds vocabulary and reinforces the use of specific words in context.
8. Hangman
How it works: One player thinks of a word, and others try to guess it by suggesting letters. If they guess a letter that is not in the chosen word, a part of the stick figure is drawn. Keep guessing letter until either an entire figure is drawn or all the letters of the word are written down.
Writing Benefit: Improves spelling and vocabulary.
9. Pictionary
How it works: Pictionary is a fun drawing and guessing game where players try to guess a word or phrase based on a teammate’s drawing. (link)
Writing Benefit: Encourages descriptive language and improves word usage in a fun, visual context.
10.Mad Libs
How it works: A fill-in-the-blank game where players are given a story template with missing words. They are asked to fill in the blanks with nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc.
The fun comes from the random combinations of words that make the story silly and creative.
Writing Benefit: Reinforces parts of speech, sentence structure, and understanding grammar rules.
11.Boggle
How it works: Players try to form as many words as possible from a grid of letters within a plastic box. The goal is to spot and write down as many words as possible before the 3-minute time runs out, making it a fast-paced and fun challenge.
Writing Benefit: Helps with word recognition, spelling, and vocabulary development.
12.Bananagrams
How it works: Players race to use all their letter tiles to form words that interconnect.
Writing Benefit: Builds vocabulary, spelling, and word formation skills
13. Virtual Writing Games
Examples: Games like Writers' Workshop on educational websites or Storybird that allows kids to write and illustrate their own stories.
