Keeping Skills Sharp Over Summer
Summer break is a time for fun, rest, and making memories—but did you think about how kids may lose some of the skills they worked so hard to build during the school year? The truth is, summer homework worksheets can often lead to resistance since they "feel like school".
The good news- Keeping skills fresh doesn’t need to feel like school.
Kids learn best when skills are applied in meaningful ways—through games, crafts, reading, cooking, real life and play.
Easy practice woven into everyday activities can make a big difference.
Try simple activities like:
Reading together for 10–15 minutes a day (Reading Comprehension)
Writing grocery lists, cards, or short journal entries (Handwriting)
Practicing math through cooking, measuring, or board games (Number Sense)
Building fine motor skills with crafts, cutting, and coloring (Fine Motor Skills)
Even 15–20 minutes of playful learning a few times a week can help children return to school feeling confident and ready.
Remember: summer learning doesn’t have to be perfect—it just needs to be consistent and fun!
