Writing Games
Playing alphabet and word-based games with your child is a great way to build skills in emerging writers.
.1. Skywriting
How it works: The learner then imagines they are drawing a letter in the air. They "trace" the letter shape with their hand, moving in the same way they would if writing on paper, using large fluid motions beginning at the shoulder.
Benefits: Large Motor Skills Development, kinesthetic learning, promotes spatial awareness
2.Rainbow writing
How it works: children trace an outline of a letter using small stokes or dashes of alternating colored crayons or markers to cover the whole letter. Another version is to retrace one letter multiple times with different colors.
Benefits: Promotes hand eye coordination, fine motor skills, letter formation practice
3. White board writing and tracing
How it works: Writing on a white board is always fun for kids and allowing them to practice letter formations on a board can give them some enjoyable practice.
benefits: Besides being fun, writing on vertical surfaces can help strengthen core muscles, back and shoulders and encourages bilateral integration.
4.Writing letters to friends, family, or a pen pal
How it works: Anytime a child feels like it they can pick up a paper and pen and just write! for more consistency, you can also set a specific time of day or time in the week to work on this.
Benefits : Encourages formal and informal writing, proper structure, and thoughtful expression
5.Story Cubes
How it works: Story cubes are dice with pictures on each side. Players roll the dice and use the images to create a story. This helps with creativity, vocabulary, and sentence structure.
Benefits: Encourages storytelling, sentence construction, and creative writing.
6. Build letters: Kids can practice forming letters of their name, their initials or any letter/word they prefer using lego, blocks, cheerios, play-do or any materials you have available.
